My name is Derek, and I am from a town just west of County Dublin in Ireland. Aged twenty, I left Ireland for a study abroad program, thinking I would only be gone for a few months, but I caught the traveling bug, and have spent the last fifteen years traveling, teaching English as a foreign language, and learning foreign languages. I’ve been back to Ireland for holidays, but I’ll probably never move back there: there’s too many other places to see and experience.
I have one extra issue that I have to consider when I am planning a trip: I am physically disabled. For around ten years at the time of writing, I have used a wheelchair. There was a while when I thought my traveling days were over because of the chair, but that was not the case: I just had to plan a bit better, make a few extra phone calls per trip, and look a bit harder for travel guides and resources.
Out of those experiences, the idea for Rolling Traveler @ Today was born. I want to share my experiences of traveling as a person in a wheelchair, and hopefully create a resource for other travelers who have to consider an extra issue when they are planning a trip.

I love this photo of you, Derek!
Thanks, Michael! Lanny took it while we were in Barcelona together. It’s the best recent shot of me. I wanted to use it as the header for the site, but it doesn’t crop well.
Having just read your posts about Jonathan and Stan’s wedding, I’m getting adds popping up at the top of the page for “yes on 8,” the proposition to ban gay marriage. Yes, Google is not perfect.
You and one other person pointed that out to me. I am going to see if I can do something so that sort of thing doesn’t happen again. I mean, that really looks weird, doesn’t it?
Hey! I live in California and just found your Blog - awesome!!!!!! I have a son who is going on 17 and uses a power chair. We are thinking of going to Germany (not sure exactly where yet) in the Fall. I’ve heard horror stories of how inaccessible Europe is - but want to go - my niece is getting married there. So… what do you think??? We’d need a car I think but perhaps public transportation would do? Thanks loads!
There are interesting experiences in your blog; when do you think to continue it contemporary?
