The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Published by Travelling Blackbird at 11:39 pm under General, Going Out Edit This

Friday was Hallowe’en, one of the two Irish holidays that made it big in the US, and from there have been creeping into other countries. Time was Hallowe’en wasn’t even acknowledged in Germany and other northern European countries, but each year, it seems to gain popularity, with stores, bars and restaurants getting into the modern spirit of the day. There’s even some trick-or-treating that goes on in some neighborhoods, although nothing like the scale of the Irish and US versions.

I’m actually not big on celebrating Hallowe’en, even if it is an Irish holiday, but I’ll never turn down a good idea for an evening out, so when my friend Jens suggested going to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at Galapagoz, I was right on board. Rocky Horror is a lot of fun to watch in a crowd, especially on Hallowe’en evening when people are more likely to dress up and get into the spirit of it, and the staff at Galapagoz have always been great at creating a good atmosphere, whatever the occasion.

The only question I needed to answer was whether or not I should go as Doctor Everett Von Scott again.

I don’t subscribe to the view that I need to include my wheelchair in whatever costume I’m wearing to a party, but if there’s a perfect costume that involves the wheelchair, why not? I went as Larry Flynt to a Playboy mansion-themed Christmas party, and Tom and I often spoke about doing Jane and Blanche from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? for Hallowe’en. Doctor Von Scott is the one Rocky Horror character no-one else is likely to turn up as, so I was sorely tempted.

Unfortunately, time was too short to do the costume justice. The suit and blanket were easy enough to find, but I didn’t have time to shave and find a pair of glasses, not to mention the problems of finding high heels in my size…

The evening was great though, and the costumes of the staff were amazing, and I mean stage-worthy amazing. I spent the whole evening in awe of the bar-tender in full Frank N. Furter gear, including the platform heels, especially considering he had to make it down a narrow spiral staircase every time something was needed from the kitchen. If you’ve never seen Rocky Horror, this is the way to watch it for the first time: with a lot of other people, especially those who get really into the movie, know the lyrics and the callbacks, and make an effort to dress up. I’ll have to do better myself, next time.

Sounds like fun! And it seems to me that high heel in your size would be an easy find in Germany.

There was a gag on Family Guy with the character in the wheelchair. He was dressed as a Gold Winning Olympian but all the other characters couldn’t accept that he wasn’t dressed up as something that didn’t include his wheel chair.

I dressed up as a restaurant host!

I bet you did! How was the Friday evening at the restaurant?

Joe is a good character to show issues like that with: I think they use him very well on the show.

And… are you saying German women have big feet, or German men like wearing heels? Inquiring minds want to know.
